Cacti MundiTop

This is a botanical garden of native Mexican cacti and succulent plants operated by Cacti Mundo, a group committed to the preservation of cacti. The garden is located in the centre of San Jose del Cabo and was established in order to provide visitors with information regarding the local flora and also about maintaining local ecosystems.

El ArcoTop

El Arco is the local name for the Arch of Poseidon which is one of Cabo’s most distinctive landmarks. Sculpted by wind, surf and sand out of the rock face, this 200 foot natural rock formation towers over the tip of the Baja Peninsula at the meeting place of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean. El Arco can be reached only by boat.

El Faro de Cabo FalsoTop

Built in 1890 and named the Lighthouse of the False Cape, the El Faro de Cabo Falso ruins are atop a cliff and are accessed by horseback, 4-wheel-drive vehicles or ATVs. A number of tour companies take visitors to the spot to view a shipwreck and sea-turtle nests.

Estero de San JoseTop

Estero de San Jose is an estuary formed by waters of the Rio San Jose as it flows into the sea. It is a protected reserve and home to 200 species of birds or more, including herons, egrets and pelicans. The beachfront is open to visitors but the waters are not safe for swimming as the surf is too powerful.

Iglesia de San LucasTop

Iglesia de San Lucas is the most popular Catholic Church in Cabo San Lucas and services are still held every Sunday in this beautiful place, which was constructed in 1730.

La CandelariaTop

This Indian village or pueblo lies 25 miles to the north of Cabo San Lucas, in the midst of a profusion of bamboo, mango and palm trees. Magic both black and white is believed to have been practised here.

Museo de las CaliforniasTop

The culture and history of the Baja Peninsula is showcased in the Museo de las Californias, which is a repository of maps, artefacts, tools and photographs dating back to the 1500s, when Cortez led expeditions here. A complete tour of the museum and its treasures can be done in half a day and is worth the visit.

Palacio MunicipalTop

This building, which currently houses the municipality offices, can be viewed from the plaza. It is an outstanding example of typical Spanish Colonial architecture. Visitors can buy a drink at any of the local restaurants and relax at one of the al fresco tables while watching life go by in old-time San Jose del Cabo.

Todos SantosTop

A flourishing village located 42 miles to the north of Cabo, Todos Santos is a must-see destination. A day trip will take you past the desert to the verdant, lush locales of Todos Santos. A Jesuit mission, dating back to 1733 and built in the architectural style of the time, is a highlight on this trip.

KayakingTop

The Sea of Cortés is the perfect place for kayaking. The kayaks used here are easy to manoeuvre and are lightweight, so it’s easy to learn in them. Their design is eminently suited to the activity as they are sleek and efficient. The placid shores of Medano Bay and Lover’s Beach are popular spots. For quieter spots that offer great kayaking in Los Cabos, you could try Chileno which is part of the Tourist Corridor. Even better still, a guided tour of Cabo Pulmo on a day trip that includes diving, snorkelling and an al fresco lunch on the beach offers an unforgettable experience. While kayaking, keep a lookout for bat rays, spotted eagles, rainbow-hued tropical fish, pelicans, sea lions, pods of dolphins and sea turtles.

Making Waves at Medano BeachTop

For those addicted to speed and thrills, Jet Skis, Yamaha Wave Runners and Sea Doos can be hired at Medano Beach or at Cabo Real which is in the Tourist Corridor. Boogie or paddle boarding is another option.

Boat CruisesTop

Cruising along the Sea of Cortés is a must-do on any visitor’s list. It is an unforgettable experience and a treat to the senses. Los Cabos has a number of excellent boats that can be hired for a two hour sunset cruise that takes you out to Land’s End, gives you a close glimpse of El Arco, the fascinating Lover’s Beach and a colony of sea lions. You could also go farther out into the ocean for a breathtaking view of scenic Cabo San Lucas Bay or cruise up till El Faro Viejo, the old lighthouse, on the Pacific Coast.

Snorkeling and DivingTop

While Los Cabos is a visual treat, its underwater life is even more so. In Cabo San Lucas Bay, which is a protected marine reserve, marine life is stunningly beautiful – shoals of multi-hued fish, exotic marine creatures and sea lions are some attractions. Fishing, spear fishing or collecting is not allowed but visitors are welcome to explore. A guided snorkelling tour or diving at Lover’s Beach is the best way to sample these treasures. Gear can be rented around the marina in the numerous dive shops there.

Whale WatchingTop

Whale watching at Los Cabos is another popular activity to indulge in. Gray and humpback whales can be spotted in the months of January to March. These giant mammals migrate across 6000 miles from the cold waters of the Bering Sea to the balmy, tropical lagoons of Scammon’s, Ojo de Liebre, San Ignacio and Magdalena Bay, just north of Los Cabos. A whale sighting is an experience that can be unforgettable.

Into the DesertTop

For trips on land, ATVs are available in both well maintained expensive fleets to small inexpensive operators. Visitors are advised to hire vehicles only from reputed companies, for their own safety. Guided tours to the Pacific Coast and into the desert to view sunrise and sunset are available. The tours allow visitors to savour the magnificent views of the ocean and the countryside and see the local flora and fauna in a leisurely, slow paced manner. This is the best way to enjoy the many wonderful sights at Los Cabos and sample local culture and history.
